In July 1939, Abe Huberman set out from Poland to visit America. His wife Sonia and their two young children remained in Warsaw. He expected to return in September. The outbreak of war turned a short absence into nearly seven years apart.

In occupied Poland, Sonia faced the Warsaw ghetto, deportation, the murder of her children, and imprisonment in Nazi concentration camps. The care of other women—including her sister—runs through her account. Across the Atlantic, Abe struggled with uncertainty, unfamiliar work, and his efforts to learn the fate of his family.

After the war, a published search notice helped reconnect them. Sonia reached America in 1946. Their reunion began another chapter: making a home, raising children, and finding ways to live with the past.

Kenneth P. Price knew Abe and Sonia as his wife Gloria’s parents. His account follows their story into the decades after the war, where memory lives in family rituals, acts of generosity, and conversations between generations.

Drawing on personal recollections, letters, interviews, and historical research, Kenneth combines an intimate family narrative with a psychologist’s reflections on the lives Abe and Sonia rebuilt.
